Our hemlock stands are at risk due to the hemlock wooly adelgid (HWA), but Cornell’s Hemlock Initiative is working to develop strategies to protect our trees and combat HWA, and citizen scientists like Ben are helping to monitor and report on changes in our forests. Come learn about their work, and discover ways that you can help support the hemlocks on your land and in our area as a whole.

Catskill Forest Association’s Ryan Trapani will discuss the overall health or state of the Catskill forest, as well as some of its history that has led us to the forest’s present condition. He will also cover some things individuals might easily do on the small scale to improve forest condition going forward.

Since the 1990s, Steve Caldwell has developed skills in navigating the backcountry of the Catskills, Adirondacks, White Mountains, and Colorado Rockies. He started with nothing but a map and compass, as GPS was not yet commercially available. The use of a map and compass is still the standard for many back country destinations as no electricity is required. Join Steve in the Beech Mountain Forest Preserve to learn how to use a map and compass and explore the wild with intention, precision, patience, and presence. These traditional land navigation skills can help you move with confidence off-trail, and hone not just your technical skills, but your appreciation for reading landscapes.

Join Friends of the Upper Delaware River for an aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling demonstration and to learn more about the life of insects below the surface! Drew Jacobs is the Watershed Program Coordinator for Friends of the Upper Delaware River (FUDR) and holds a B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources from West Virginia University. In his free time Drew enjoys birdwatching and river recreation.

With a changing climate, and greater frequency of drought and high temperatures in the Catskills Region, it’s important for landowners to understand the best practices and risks associated with wildfires.
