Shin Creek Music Festival

The Shin Creek Music Festival brings beautiful, energizing classical and contemporary chamber music to the Beaverkill Valley. For most of his life, co-artistic director Nicky Swett has spent summers and played music at the Lew Beach home that once belonged to his great-grandfather Irving Berlin. He is thrilled to team up with his wife, internationally renowned cellist Geirþrúður Guðmundsdottir, to present three concerts of favorite solo and small ensemble works in the newly renovated Lew Beach Community House.

Shin Creek Music Festival Concert 1: Bach and Hafsteinsson

Tuesday, August 4, 6:00pm

Lew Beach Community House

Festival co-artistic director Geirþrúður Guðmundsdottir kicks off this inaugural season with a daring solo cello recital featuring works by J.S. Bach and Icelandic composer Guðmundur Hafsteinsson. Bach’s Second Cello Suite is his most intimate and melancholy work for this instrument. It serves as a perfect prelude for Hafsteinsson’s magnificent Spuni (“Spinning”), an ambitious, grand statement that reveals all that a single cello can do. At times meditative, at times almost impossibly virtuosic, this music uses just one instrument to take the listener on a wild and powerful journey.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Cello Suite No. 2, BWV 1008

Guðmundur Hafsteinsson: Spuni I

Geirþrúður Guðmundsdottir, cello

Adults: $25.00 Children: Free
